We now see the fallacy of our efforts.: you shouldn’t need a business case at all.
Initiative 2117, which effectively repeals Washington State’s Climate Commitment Act (CCA), will negatively impact our local business community through a reduction in planned financial investments in transportation and wildfire prevention, impacts to our local workforce, and eliminating a tool that will help mitigate financial risks already being experienced by businesses.
Initiative 2066 is needless and is a solution in search of a problem that doesn’t exist. This initiative actually repeals important planning measures that will keep energy costs lower. While this initiative seeks to ensure consumers have continual access to natural gas, existing state law already guarantees access. More importantly, we need to reduce burning fossil fuels, including natural gas, to slow climate change. There are already significant economic impacts from our warming climate.
Our changing climate impacts every aspect of our lives—our economy, our communities, and the environment—in ways both visible and unseen. Completing a climate vulnerability assessment and developing a climate action plan are critical steps for cities, counties, businesses and tribes to build resilience and adapt to these changes.
When B Lab launched the Climate Justice Playbook for business, the B Corp community was excited. Companies understood the principles, and wanted more examples of companies implementing climate justice initiatives. As a member of the B Corp Climate Collective, Measure Meant lead the effort to write the case studies.
Creating a company culture that supports Sustainability, particularly a culture with aggressive targets, requires a lot of planning and coordination. Taking time to think through the change, setting clear goals, and working closely with your team(s) gets you started in the right direction. And getting the right help is always a good idea.
As a graduating senior at Gonzaga University, I had not planned on pursuing another internship in my final semester. When I received an email that Measure Meant was welcoming interns, I knew I wanted to apply. My time at Measure Meant was incredibly uplifting and I am so glad that I jumped at this opportunity.
As a young student with a passion for climate justice and sustainability, it always felt like a contradiction to pursue a degree in business. But as time moved forward, I started to recognize some of the changes that were happening around me regarding policy and impact. Measure Meant gave me the opportunity to serve as an intern for my final semester of college, where I got to witness the world of sustainable business firsthand.
